The exact date of construction is unknown; the 1545 privilege is the earliest confirmed reference and a possible date for the founding of the parish. From 1639 a monastery of the Brothers Hospitallers (Boniface Fathers) operated on the churchyard. After the fires of 1781 and 1845 the complex was not rebuilt.
